Sabres Rally Past Minnesota in Overtime Thriller, 3-2

The Buffalo Sabres erased a two-goal deficit and capped it off with an overtime winner from Owen Power, downing Minnesota 3-2 on Tuesday night in a game that showcased the kind of resilience this club will need all season long.

First Period: Special Teams Battle, No Blood Drawn

The opening frame was defined by penalties rather than goals. Minnesota's J. Brodin was whistled for hooking just over four minutes in, while Buffalo picked up two of its own, with Z. Benson called for cross-checking and R. Dahlin for high-sticking late in the period. Despite the parade to the box, neither side found the back of the net, setting the stage for a tighter, more eventful second period.

Second Period: Minnesota Strikes Twice

The Wild broke the deadlock in the middle frame, scoring twice in the span of less than two minutes. D. Yurov opened the scoring at 13:53, assisted by J. Spurgeon and B. Coleman, before M. Shabanov doubled the lead just over a minute and a half later at 15:38, with helpers from Q. Hughes and M. McCarron. Buffalo also took a pair of penalties in the period — R. McLeod for slashing and P. Krebs for interference — but the Sabres killed off the danger and headed into the third down 2-0, facing a familiar uphill climb.

Third Period: Buffalo Answers Back

Buffalo didn't wait long to respond. Just 3:55 into the third, N. Ostlund got the Sabres on the board, assisted by O. Power and R. Dahlin, cutting the deficit in half. The comeback continued less than six minutes later when T. Thompson tied the game at 9:38 with help from P. Krebs, knotting the score at 2-2. Minnesota's O. Maatta was called for high-sticking late in the period, but the Wild's penalty kill held strong, sending the game to overtime.

Overtime: Power Plays the Hero

It didn't take long for Buffalo to settle matters in the extra frame. At 4:22 of overtime, Owen Power buried the game-winner, assisted by J. Kulich and T. Thompson, sending the Sabres to a 3-2 victory.

Standout Performers

The night's Three Stars told the story of the comeback: Owen Power earned first-star honors with his overtime heroics, T. Thompson was named second star after his tying goal and OT assist, and N. Ostlund rounded out the trio with the goal that got Buffalo back into the game.

Special Teams and Goaltending

Both teams combined for six penalties, though neither power play unit found the back of the net in this one. In goal, C. Ellis turned in a strong performance for Buffalo, stopping 18 of 20 shots faced for a .900 save percentage, while Minnesota's J. Wallstedt made 25 saves on 28 shots. Buffalo out-shot the Wild 28-20 on the night.

Looking Ahead

This comeback win, powered by contributions up and down the lineup and a clutch overtime finish from Power, should give the Sabres plenty of confidence as they continue through their schedule. The resilience shown after falling behind by two goals is exactly the kind of character Buffalo will need to build on moving forward.
