Sabres Defeat FLA 5-3

Sabres Hold Off Panthers Surge, Win 5-3 at Home

The Buffalo Sabres opened the scoring and never trailed on Monday night, outlasting a pesky Florida Panthers squad by a final score of 5-3. With 8 total goals scored in the contest and the Sabres piling up 32 shots on goal to Florida's 23, Buffalo's offense was humming all night long in front of the home crowd.

First Period: Sabres Strike First, Twice

Buffalo wasted little time getting on the board, as J. Doan buried a feed from P. Krebs just 5:58 into the opening frame. Florida answered back at the 11:00 mark when A. Lundell scored off helpers from A. Ekblad and S. Vilmanis, knotting the game at one. But the Sabres responded before the period ended, as R. Dahlin found the back of the net at 15:55, assisted by J. Quinn and T. Thompson, sending Buffalo into the first intermission with a 2-1 lead.

Second Period: Reinhart Answers, McLeod Restores the Cushion

Florida's S. Reinhart opened the scoring in the middle frame, tying things up at 06:26 with assists from S. Jones and M. Tkachuk. The Sabres quickly pushed back ahead, however, as R. McLeod scored at 11:25 with help from O. Zellweger and O. Power. Reinhart struck again at 13:41 — his second of the night — set up by B. Tkachuk and S. Jones, pulling the Panthers back within one heading into the third.

Third Period: Sabres Pull Away

Buffalo put the game out of reach in the final frame. N. Ostlund scored at 07:15, assisted by Z. Benson and J. Quinn, before T. Thompson capped off the scoring at 13:20 with helpers from O. Power and P. Krebs. The two third-period tallies gave the Sabres the cushion they needed to close out the win.

Standout Performers

The night's Three Stars told the story of Buffalo's depth scoring. N. Ostlund earned first-star honors with his third-period goal, while R. McLeod was recognized for his momentum-shifting tally in the second. J. Quinn rounded out the trio, picking up two assists on the night and showing his playmaking ability throughout.

Special Teams

Penalties flowed freely in this one, with nine total minors called across both teams. Florida was whistled for five penalties including infractions from D. Kulikov, R. Gudas, A. Ekblad (twice), and E. Luostarinen, while Buffalo took four of their own, including two by J. Norris. Power-play data was not available for this contest, but the physical, penalty-filled nature of the game added extra intrigue to the special teams battle.

Goaltending

Buffalo turned to a tandem effort in net, with U. Luukkonen stopping 13 of 14 shots before C. Ellis finished the game with 7 saves on 9 shots. Florida countered with J. Markstrom (9 saves on 11 shots) and A. Schmid (18 saves on 21 shots), but neither netminder could slow down Buffalo's balanced attack.

Looking Ahead

With five different goal-scorers and contributions up and down the lineup, this win showcased the kind of depth that could carry the Sabres through a long season. If Buffalo can continue to get this level of offensive balance alongside steady tandem goaltending, they'll be a tough out as the schedule rolls on.
