Khalil Shakir Injury Uncertainty Continues As Bills' Starting WR Remains

Shakir's Injury Status Remains Murky as Bills Prepare for Season Opener

Buffalo Bills wide receiver Khalil Shakir continues to sit out of practice with an undisclosed injury, leaving his status for the Week 1 matchup against the Houston Texans in question despite growing optimism from within the organization.

Latest Development

According to CBS Sports' Matt Zenitz, Shakir has missed practice time recently with an undisclosed injury but there's currently optimism he'll end up being available for Buffalo's opener vs. the Texans, with the Bills being cautious with him. ESPN currently lists Shakir's status as Questionable heading into the regular season.

Timeline of the Injury

Shakir was able to suit up for the preseason opener against the Panthers on Aug. 15, hauling in both of his targets for 41 yards while playing eight offensive snaps. However, he's been out of drills since Aug. 20 and didn't suit up for the Bills' final two exhibition games due to the undisclosed injury.

The absence has now stretched for more than two weeks. Shakir has not practiced since Aug. 18, when he was one of several Bills held out, and head coach Joe Brady later confirmed he was dealing with an injury. The Bills have not disclosed the specific nature of the injury.

As of Tuesday's session, Shakir remained sidelined at practice, according to Joe Buscaglia of The Athletic.

Path Forward

Buffalo opens the regular season on Sunday, Sept. 13 at Houston, giving Shakir less than two weeks to get himself ready for game action. The team's approach so far suggests caution rather than alarm. The Bills are being cautious with him , and per ESPN's reporting, the Bills will post their first Week 1 injury report next Wednesday, which will provide a clearer sense of his status ahead of the regular-season opener.

Roster Context

Shakir's absence has been part of a banged-up receiver room in Buffalo this preseason. Fellow wideout Keon Coleman has also dealt with a foot injury, while the Bills bolstered their receiving corps this offseason by trading for DJ Moore, who is now listed alongside Joshua Palmer and Coleman on the current roster.

The Bills enter the regular season fresh off a strong preseason slate, having gone 3-0 in exhibition play, including wins over Carolina, Cleveland and Pittsburgh. Whether Shakir — a key part of Buffalo's passing offense in recent seasons — will be ready to contribute against Houston remains one of the top storylines to watch as the team finalizes its Week 1 roster.
