Brady was promoted from offensive coordinator to head coach on January 27, 2026, signing a five-year deal to replace Sean McDermott , who led the Bills to the playoffs in eight of nine seasons but only reached the AFC Championship Game twice and never advanced to the Super Bowl . Unlike most first-time head coaches, Brady has been given no grace period by fans, analysts, or Bills legends alike. "They're winning playoff games every year, that's a high bar. And for Bills fans, at this point, that ain't enough. Joe knows that, so I would say you've got to get to the AFC Championship Game," said former Bills great Steve Tasker.

CBS Sports' Jordan Dajani echoed that sentiment, noting the Bills have won at least 11 games every year since 2020, but decided to make the controversial decision to fire their coach and promote offensive coordinator Joe Brady after an overtime loss in the divisional round . Dajani added that "it's 'Super Bowl or bust' for the Bills under Brady."

Buffalo has looked sharp through two preseason contests, defeating Carolina 29-14 on Aug. 15 and Cleveland 31-7 on Aug. 22. WIVB's John Murphy noted "with two preseason games down, one to go, they're scoring plenty of points. Their re-fitted defense has looked solid against a couple of last year's also-rans." Still, Murphy remains skeptical Brady's staff is "cut out to win the Super Bowl this season."

Even optimistic projections stop short of predicting a title. USA Today's 2026 NFL schedule predictions have Brady and the Bills projected to finish 11-6 in his first year at the helm , with one analyst noting "you've got Allen, you've got a championship-caliber roster... but it is extremely tough for a first-time head coach to win a Super Bowl in his first season. That almost never happens."

Brady Embraces the Pressure

For his part, Brady has welcomed the challenge rather than shying from it. "I didn't take this job to shy away from expectations. I sure as hell did not do that," Brady said days after taking the job. "I'm embracing it. I'm understanding it. And I'm meeting it full-on."
