Joe Brady Sets the Tone as First-Year Head Coach Opens Training Camp

PITTSFORD, N.Y. — As the Buffalo Bills returned to St. John Fisher University for training camp, this marked the first with Joe Brady leading the charge as head coach, replacing Sean McDermott after nine seasons. Brady addressed the media on July 29, covering the anticipation surrounding camp, his message to the team, injury updates, roster competition, and his coaching philosophy.

"We Haven't Earned a Damn Thing"

Brady made clear he wants no shortcuts in year one at the helm. Speaking to the mindset of expectations for the Bills, which he knows are sky high, Brady said "We haven't done a damn thing…we haven't earned a damn thing." He emphasized that this camp would look different from years past. "We've never been here before, and this training camp is going to be different than we've ever had. And that's not to say anything we've ever done is wrong, but I need the guys to understand that approach, and we can't assume anything," he said.

That philosophy played out on the field the same day. The Bills ran onto a rain-soaked field for their first day of training camp, and it didn't let up much throughout the hour-and-a-half practice — exactly how first-year head coach Joe Brady wanted it.

"I think this is perfect. It's the first day, 8:30 a.m. practice, it's raining, that's what I want," Brady said. "It's got to be a tough camp."

Injury and Player Updates

Brady touched on injury updates during his session, a topic echoed by general manager Brandon Beane, who also addressed the media on July 29 and discussed building chemistry as a team, the first training camp with Joe Brady as head coach, and shared player and injury updates. Among the positive notes, Brady highlighted tight end Dalton Kincaid's conditioning. "In the conditioning test yesterday, Kincaid absolutely knocked it out of the park," Brady said. "We wanted to challenge the guys with it, but he's in a great place and I'm excited for him to go through training camp."

Coaching Style and Beane's Endorsement

Beane offered his own assessment of how Brady has approached the transition from coordinator to head coach. Beane said Brady has backed up everything he laid out during the interview process with a deliberate approach throughout the offseason, calling him "very real in his interview, very authentic" and noting "it hasn't just been hollow words." Beane added that Brady isn't coming in claiming things didn't work in the past, but rather wants to build on what's been done well while putting his own stamp on the program to "win a championship."

Quarterback Josh Allen, who also spoke to reporters, focused on re-establishing chemistry with his pass catchers after the offseason break, saying the team "had a good, productive first day" while noting there are always things to clean up. Training camp continues at St. John Fisher through Aug. 7 before shifting to Orchard Park, with a practice on Aug. 8 set for the new Highmark Stadium, open only to season ticket holders.
