Ed Oliver Considered Day-to-Day, Could Return for Bills' Week 3 Matchup vs. Chargers
Ed Oliver is dealing with a hip injury suffered during pregame warmups ahead of Buffalo's Week 2 matchup, but there is optimism he could return as early as Week 3.
According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Oliver is considered day-to-day and could be available for the Bills' Week 3 tilt against the Chargers on Sunday, Sept. 27 . Rapoport later provided additional detail on the injury, describing Oliver's injury as "hip spasms," which had not previously been reported .
The injury caught the Bills organization off guard. When the Bills released their list of inactives ahead of kickoff against the Lions, it shockingly included Oliver, who did not have an injury designation going into Thursday night . Buffalo officially ruled out Oliver due to the warm-up injury, and he was inactive for the game.
Buffalo went on to defeat Detroit 41-31 without its star defensive tackle, improving to 2-0 on the season. In Week 1 against the Houston Texans, Oliver recorded 5 tackles and recovered a fumble , showing the kind of impact the Bills hope to have available again soon.
The timing of the injury does provide the Bills some breathing room. With Buffalo having a mini bye after playing on Thursday Night Football, it will allow Oliver extra time to heal up his hip. Buffalo head coach Brady (per Athlon Sports) indicated the team is not rushing to conclusions. Brady said Friday that he is holding off on making prognoses until the team can see what rest does for both starters.
Oliver isn't the only banged-up starter the Bills are monitoring. Wide receiver DJ Moore, who suffered a shoulder injury in the second quarter, is also listed as day-to-day, with both Moore and Oliver having a chance to be back next week. Of the two, it seems like Oliver has a better shot at playing in Week 3 than Moore, but if they both can practice, it's not out of the question that they both could make speedy recoveries.
Buffalo does not have to formally update its injury report until later in the week. Buffalo does not have to share an injury report until Wednesday, and with or without Moore and Oliver in the lineup, the Bills aim to improve their record to 3-0 next Sunday when they host the Los Angeles Chargers for a 1 p.m. ET start.
Oliver, the No. 9 overall pick in the 2019 draft, has battled injuries throughout his Bills tenure. Oliver has 30 sacks in eight seasons with the Bills. Last season presented significant challenges, as he played in only three games in 2025 . Buffalo will provide further clarity on his status as the week progresses toward Sunday's divisional-flavored matchup against the Chargers.
