Bills Emerge as Suitor for Buccaneers' Disgruntled Pro Bowl Nose Tackle Vita Vea

The Buffalo Bills have entered the mix of teams pursuing a trade for Tampa Bay Buccaneers Pro Bowl nose tackle Vita Vea, who requested a move out of Tampa Bay after contract extension talks broke down.

Vea's Trade Request

Two-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Vita Vea requested a trade from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after talks on a contract extension stalled, his agent, Collin Roberts, told ESPN.

Vea, 31, is entering the final year of a four-year, $71 million contract and is set to earn $17 million this season, with none of it guaranteed. His agent has since made clear the situation is unlikely to resolve without a trade, telling the Tampa Bay Times, "I just don't see it ending in anything but a trade at this point." Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht, however, has pushed back publicly, stating "I have no plans on trading Vita."

Bills Among Multiple Suitors

According to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo, Buffalo has checked in on Vea's availability alongside several other clubs. "Amongst them, I'm told, is the Bills, the Bears, the 49ers, and there are a few others as well. But the Buccaneers continue to say internally they are not trading Vita Vea," Garafolo said.

The Bucs reportedly shut them down, but Vea did ask for a trade in July and there's no indication that the team has smoothed things over with the two-time Pro Bowler. Garafolo also indicated no deal is imminent between the two sides.

Why Buffalo Fits

New defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard is installing a 3-4 scheme that differs from the previous 4-3 base used under former head coach Sean McDermott, and the Bills lack a traditional nose tackle capable of controlling the center of the line. Current roster options at the position remain thin, with second-year lineman Deone Walker among the few interior options on hand. Buffalo's defense struggled against the run last season, and adding a player of Vea's caliber could address that need directly in front of the middle of the line, next to returning starter Ed Oliver.

Vea's Production and Value

Last season, Vea appeared in all 17 games, finishing with 4.5 sacks, 13 quarterback hits and 34 tackles, and has 35 sacks in eight seasons since the Buccaneers selected him with the 12th pick in the 2018 NFL draft. He was selected to the Pro Bowl in 2021 and 2024. He also won a Super Bowl with Tampa Bay during the 2020 season.

Any trade would come with financial complications, as Vea is entering the final year of his contract and is set to earn approximately $18 million in 2026, well below his perceived market value, with none of that money guaranteed. General manager Brandon Beane has previously been cautious about surrendering significant draft capital in trades, and any acquisition would likely require a subsequent contract extension for Vea. As of now, the Buccaneers maintain they do not intend to move their star defensive tackle, leaving Buffalo's interest in a holding pattern.
