Sabres Fall to Montreal 4-2 Despite Outshooting Visitors

The Buffalo Sabres dropped a frustrating 4-2 decision to Montreal at home on Saturday night, despite outshooting their opponents 38-31 in a game that slipped away in the third period. Cole Caufield's two-goal performance and stellar goaltending from Jakub Dobes proved to be the difference as the Sabres couldn't capitalize on their territorial advantage.

First Period Sets the Tone

Montreal struck first at 11:20 of the opening frame when Juraj Slafkovský found the back of the net, assisted by Nick Suzuki and Cole Caufield. The Sabres faced early penalty trouble with Tage Thompson taking an interference call at the 10-minute mark, followed by Bowen Byram's tripping penalty late in the period. Despite the adversity, Buffalo managed to keep the deficit at one heading into the intermission.

Sabres Surge Back in Second

The middle frame belonged to Buffalo as they found their offensive rhythm. Owen Power tied the game at 7:36 with help from Tage Thompson and Rasmus Dahlin, capitalizing on strong puck movement from the blue line. The Sabres took their first lead of the night when Noah Ostlund scored at 18:56, with Alex Tuch and Bowen Byram picking up the assists on a late-period strike that had the home crowd energized.

The second period also featured a parade to the penalty box, with Montreal's Lane Hutson serving time for both tripping and high-sticking, while Ryan McLeod was called for hooking. Noah Dobson also took a high-sticking penalty for the visitors, giving both teams multiple special teams opportunities.

Third Period Collapse

The final frame proved costly for Buffalo as Montreal seized control with three unanswered goals. Cole Caufield began the comeback at 4:14, assisted by Noah Dobson and Lane Hutson, before adding his second of the night at 10:13 with helpers from Nick Suzuki and Kirby Dach. Otto Kapanen put the game away with 48 seconds remaining, scoring from Noah Dobson to seal the 4-2 victory.

Goaltending Tale of Two Netminders

The story between the pipes couldn't have been more contrasting. Buffalo's Alex Lyon made 27 saves on 30 shots for a 90.0% save percentage in a solid effort that deserved better offensive support. Meanwhile, Montreal's Jakub Dobes was exceptional, stopping 36 of 38 shots for an impressive 94.7% save percentage to earn the victory.

Special Teams and Standout Performances

Cole Caufield earned first star honors with his two-goal performance, while Jakub Dobes took second star recognition for his outstanding goaltending display. Owen Power claimed third star status for his goal and overall defensive play.

Looking Ahead

This loss stings for a Sabres team that generated quality scoring chances and controlled play for long stretches. The 38 shots on goal demonstrate Buffalo's ability to create offense, but converting those opportunities against hot goaltending remains a challenge. With Power, Thompson, and Dahlin continuing to produce offensively, the Sabres will need to find ways to solve opposing netminders more consistently as they move forward in their campaign.
