Sabres Survive Wild 8-7 Thriller Against Tampa Bay
The Buffalo Sabres pulled off a heart-stopping 8-7 victory over Tampa Bay in a goal-fest at home Sunday night, outgunning the visitors 42-28 in shots while surviving a frantic third-period rally that saw 15 total goals scored across all three periods.
First Period Sets Chippy Tone
The opening frame was defined more by fisticuffs than scoring, with multiple fighting majors breaking out early. Rasmus Dahlin dropped the gloves with Darren Raddysh, while Sam Carrick tangled with Scott Sabourin just minutes later. Brandon Hagel also earned a fighting major in the penalty-filled period.
Despite the chaos, Buffalo managed to break through late in the frame when Josh Doan capitalized at 8:26, assisted by Tage Thompson and Bowen Byram, giving the Sabres a 1-0 lead heading into the intermission.
Second Period Explosion
The middle frame turned into an absolute offensive showcase with seven combined goals. Buffalo appeared to take control early, as Jason Zucker extended the lead to 2-0 just 2:15 into the period with helpers from Dahlin and Thompson. Alex Tuch made it 3-0 at 5:10, again with Thompson picking up an assist alongside Noah Ostlund.
Tampa Bay finally answered when Corey Perry got them on the board at 7:55, assisted by Nikita Kucherov and Raddysh. Tuch restored the three-goal cushion with his second of the night at 11:07, but the visitors weren't finished. Kucherov struck back just over a minute later, and surprisingly, Zemgus Girgensons found the net for Tampa Bay at 14:46. Jake Moser capped the wild period with another Tampa Bay goal at 17:37, sending the teams to the locker room with Buffalo clinging to a 4-4 tie.
Third Period Drama
The final frame delivered pure hockey theater with seven more goals. Tampa Bay stunned the home crowd by taking their first lead just 59 seconds in when Kucherov completed his hat trick. Brayden Point extended it to 6-4 at 5:46 before Carrick answered for Buffalo at 6:12 with help from Zach Benson and Michael Kesselring.
Brandon Hagel restored Tampa Bay's two-goal lead at 9:48, but the Sabres showed remarkable resilience down the stretch. Dahlin pulled Buffalo within one at 11:03 with Thompson and Byram assisting, setting up a frantic finish.
Clutch Closing Minutes
With time running out, Zucker delivered the equalizer at 14:29 off a Ryan McLeod feed, electrifying the home crowd. Just over a minute later, Doan completed his own two-goal night at 15:43, with Zucker and Dahlin providing the assists on what proved to be the game-winner.
Stellar Individual Performances
Thompson was the offensive catalyst with four assists, while Doan and Zucker each tallied two goals. Dahlin contributed three points with a goal and two assists. For Tampa Bay, Kucherov's hat trick wasn't enough to prevent the loss.
Between the pipes, Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen earned the victory despite allowing seven goals, making 22 saves on 28 shots. Jonas Johansson was solid for Tampa Bay with 34 saves but took the loss in the wild affair.
This thrilling victory showcases the Sabres' offensive depth and resilience, qualities that will serve them well as they continue their push through the season.
