Gardner-Johnson Returns to Practice Following Calf Strain
Buffalo Bills safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson is back on the practice field, resuming full team drills less than a week after suffering a calf injury that initially sparked concern among fans and teammates alike.
The Injury
Gardner-Johnson was carted to the locker room after suffering a lower-body injury during training camp practice on a Saturday.
The safety went down during an 11-on-11 period and was tended to by athletic trainers who examined his lower right leg and foot area. The scary scene led to widespread worry that the veteran defensive back had suffered a significant injury.
A source told ESPN's Adam Schefter that tests revealed Gardner-Johnson suffered a lower calf strain.
Tests diagnosed a calf strain, giving the Bills relief after it was initially feared that Gardner-Johnson sustained a more serious injury to his Achilles tendon.
Coach's Comments
Bills head coach Joe Brady addressed the injury following the diagnosis. "We're fortunate," Brady said. "Anytime you see a lower body extremity injury and in the manner in which some of those happen, there's always a bad possibility with it, right?" Brady declined to offer a specific recovery timetable, noting that "everybody's body recovers differently."
The Return
The veteran safety returned to the practice field at St. John Fisher University for the team's sixth training camp practice, surprising many as a full participant.
Gardner-Johnson returned to practice less than a week after straining a calf muscle in his right leg during training camp.
Context and Outlook
Gardner-Johnson, a free agent addition this offseason, is a projected starting safety alongside third-year safety Cole Bishop. During his absence, veteran safeties Geno Stone and Damar Hamlin filled in with the first-team defense.
The 28-year-old signed a one-year contract with Buffalo this offseason. In 2024, when he won the Super Bowl with the Eagles, Gardner-Johnson played 805 of his 1,170 snaps at free safety, epitomizing versatility in the secondary. His quick return is viewed as a positive sign for a Bills secondary looking to establish stability at the position, particularly as Gardner-Johnson continues learning a new defensive system in his first season with the franchise.
