Bills Cruise Past Panthers 29-14 in Preseason Tune-Up at Highmark Stadium
The Buffalo Bills put together a complete performance on Saturday, dispatching the Carolina Panthers 29-14 in front of the home crowd at Highmark Stadium. Behind balanced production on both sides of the ball, Buffalo controlled time of possession, avoided turnovers, and got contributions from across the depth chart in a preseason win that should have fans feeling good about the roster.
Quarter-by-Quarter
Buffalo wasted little time getting on the board, with Tyler Bass connecting on a 33-yard field goal at the 11:22 mark of the first quarter. The Bills offense kept rolling from there, as Josh Allen found Keon Coleman for a 9-yard touchdown strike with 5:12 left in the opening frame, giving Buffalo an early cushion.
The scoring continued into the second quarter when Bass drilled a 46-yarder from 46 yards out to push the lead further. Carolina finally got on the board late in the half, as Kenny Pickett connected with Ja'seem Reed on a 6-yard touchdown pass with 29 seconds remaining, cutting the deficit to 13-7 heading into the break.
Buffalo answered in the third quarter with another Bass field goal, this one from 29 yards out, extending the lead to 16-7. The Bills then took over in the fourth quarter, salting away the game with a ground-and-pound approach. Ian Wheeler punched in a 6-yard touchdown run (the two-point conversion failed), and Frank Gore Jr. followed with a 3-yard scoring run to make it 29-7. Carolina added a garbage-time touchdown when Kyle Trask hit John Metchie III for a 9-yard score with 20 seconds left, but it was far too little, too late.
Standout Performers
Josh Allen was efficient in his limited action, completing 6-of-8 passes for 111 yards and a touchdown, posting a gaudy 156.2 passer rating. Backup Kyle Allen also impressed, going 14-of-16 for 108 yards to keep the offense humming throughout.
The receiving corps spread the wealth, with DJ Moore leading the way at 3 catches for 61 yards, while Stephen Gosnell (3 catches, 44 yards) and Khalil Shakir (2 catches, 41 yards) each made explosive plays down the field. Keleki Latu added 4 receptions for 33 yards.
On the ground, the Bills racked up 151 rushing yards as a team. Wheeler led the way with 7 carries for 41 yards and a score, Gore Jr. added 38 yards and a touchdown of his own, and Mecole Hardman Jr. flashed big-play ability with a 27-yard scamper.
Defensively, Toriano Pride Jr. paced the unit with 6 total tackles, while Jordan Hancock chipped in 4 tackles with 2 passes defended. Javon Solomon also recorded 4 tackles as Buffalo's defense held Carolina to just 201 total yards and forced a turnover.
Special Teams
Tyler Bass was money all night, converting all three of his field goal attempts (33, 46, and 29 yards) to go along with his extra points, continuing to be a reliable weapon for Buffalo.
Looking Ahead
With a 396-201 total yardage advantage and a decisive win over Carolina, the Bills showed the kind of depth and execution that should translate well as the regular season approaches. The balanced attack — spreading catches among multiple receivers and getting production from the backfield — suggests this offense has plenty of weapons to work with heading into the year.
