Bills Draw Record Crowd of 51,807 for First Event at New $2.2 Billion Highmark Stadium

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — The Buffalo Bills officially christened their new home on Saturday night, as the Buffalo Bills welcomed 51,807 fans to the 2026 Return of Blue & Red, marking the first team event at Highmark Stadium. The turnout set a new attendance record for the fan favorite event.

The scrimmage represented the first public event at the stadium Saturday night with the annual "Return of the Blue & Red" training camp practice , and personal seat license (PSL) owners were able to sit in their new seats for the first time. Despite the massive crowd, the 60,108-capacity stadium was nearly full for the Return of the Blue & Red, despite it being a practice.

A Night of Firsts

Josh Allen donned the Nickel City alternate uniform with the gray jerseys and blue helmet, and played his annual round of catch with Bills Mafia. Head coach Joe Brady emphasized the game-like atmosphere, noting he wanted to make it feel like a game for the players — getting used to the sights and sounds — especially under the lights since their first home game of the regular season is at night. Brady called the atmosphere "an incredible environment," adding, "when over 50,000 [show up] for practice, right? That's special. That's Buffalo."

On the field, backup quarterback Kyle Allen connected on two touchdown throws, including a go ball to WR Mecole Hardman who got behind CB Jordan Hancock down the sideline , while safety Cole Bishop ran stride for stride with TE Dalton Kincaid and turned his head at the perfect moment to find the ball and come away with an INT.

Stadium Details and Growing Pains

The venue, which spans around 1.6 million square feet across a 242-acre site , features a notable design shift as Buffalo opted against a dome, turning instead to a canopy structure designed to shelter two-thirds of the seats from weather, with heaters installed for both seating areas and a new natural grass field.

However, the historic night was not without controversy. Posts from certain seats that either have portions of the stadium or elements of the stairways blocking part of view have gained traction on social media. In response, the team said it is "currently addressing internal and external feedback regarding the facility's operation following the first event," and will "utilize the next six weeks to refine any details as we prepare for the home opener on Thursday, Sept. 17."

The Bills' regular-season debut at the new stadium comes Thursday, Sept. 17, 2026, vs. Detroit Lions.
