Bills Offseason Update: Week of August 10

August 17, 20264 min read

Opening

It was a landmark week for the Buffalo Bills, as the franchise's new $2.1+ billion Highmark Stadium officially opened its doors to the public and hosted its first-ever competitive action. Fans got two tastes of the state-of-the-art facility — first at a training camp practice, then in a preseason victory — while the front office made headlines by locking up a key building block on the offensive line. With training camp winding down and the regular season approaching, the Bills used this week to make statements both on the field and in the front office.

Top Stories

Highmark Stadium Debuts in Style The new home of the Bills welcomed its first public event with the Return of the Blue & Red practice, drawing more than 51,000 fans eager to experience the new facility before it hosted real football. That energy carried over into Saturday, when the Bills christened the building with a preseason matchup against the Carolina Panthers. New head coach, new Buffalo Bills stadium, new primary receiver — but it was the same Josh Allen, as he grew accustomed to his new surroundings by overseeing a pair of scoring drives to kick off the franchise's new era with a preseason-opening 29-14 win.

Allen went 6 for 8 for 111 yards, starting with a 21-yard throw to Khalil Shakir on a play-action pass on the first snap from scrimmage. The signature moment came on his second and final series, when Allen displayed his familiar strong arm and elusive scrambling abilities on a 9-yard touchdown pass to Keon Coleman.

Bills Lock Up O'Cyrus Torrence In a significant piece of business ahead of the season, Buffalo secured its offensive line for years to come. The Buffalo Bills agreed to a four-year, $78.4 million contract extension with right guard O'Cyrus Torrence, with the agreement including $46 million guaranteed.

The deal makes him the seventh-highest-paid guard in the league. The move continues a trend of stability up front — with Torrence's new deal, four of the Bills' projected five starting offensive linemen are now under contract through at least the 2027 season, leaving left guard as the lone unsettled position entering the season. Quarterback Josh Allen didn't hide his enthusiasm for the extension, saying "He deserves every penny... Cybo's just that guy on the team where you ask anybody, I don't think anybody could say a bad thing about O'Cyrus Torrence. And he's the ultimate teammate."

Defense Flashes Under Leonhard Defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard's unit made its presence felt in the opener, with defense being the focal point for Buffalo in its first game under Leonhard, making plays up and down the depth chart. That carried the momentum from training camp, where interior standout Ed Oliver had dominated practice reps with multiple sacks and pressures over back-to-back sessions.

Quick Hits

  • DJ Moore continued building chemistry with Allen in his Bills debut, with the pairing already on full display, with the quarterback already playing like he's in midseason form.

  • Keon Coleman carried his strong camp into the preseason opener, capping the night with the touchdown grab that showcased his continued growth as a red-zone target.

  • Kicker Tyler Bass returned to game action for the first time since his 2025 season was cut short, going 3 of 4 while missing a 45-yard field-goal attempt wide right, in his first game setting since a pelvis and hip issue sidelined him all of last season.

Roster Watch

Beyond the Torrence extension, the biggest storyline remains health along the roster as Buffalo shakes out its preseason depth chart. Running back James Cook III got early snaps in the opener, while the offensive line — now largely locked in financially — continues to jell as a unit heading into the regular season. On the Panthers' side of the ball, Carolina was without both starting tackles, but the Bills' own front seven showed no signs of slowing down, with Ed Oliver's camp dominance a clear sign of a defensive line ready to disrupt opposing offenses in 2026.

Looking Ahead

The Bills won't have much time to celebrate their stadium debut. Buffalo travels to Cleveland for a joint scrimmage on Thursday, followed by a preseason game. Expect head coach Joe Brady to get a longer look at his starters against the Browns before beginning to shift focus toward final roster cuts. With Highmark Stadium now officially broken in, all eyes turn to how quickly this retooled offense — highlighted by the Allen-Moore connection — can hit its stride before Week 1 of the regular season arrives.
